Shutter Island

Edward faces many unusual things happening around and suspects that something was really wrong as staff and psychiatrist Dr. John Cawley, behave as if they are hiding something.

They learn that Doctor, who was treating and incharge of Solando, had left the island immediately after Solando disappeared. Meanwhile, Teddy experiences severe headaches, experiencing his flashbacks as an Army soldier, and also disturbing dreams of his wife Dolores, who was killed in a fire accident done by Andrew Laeddis. Teddy tells Chuck that he took the case to find Laeddis, as he believes that he is on this Island.

Teddy later bursts into the restricted Ward  to find Laeddis where he meets patient George who knows Laeddis well. He tells Teddy that he might be near the lighthouse as the doctors are experimenting on some patients. He warns Teddy not to trust anyone including Chuck.

Teddy along with Chuck climb the cliffs toward the lighthouse but they eventually gets separated. Teddy climbs down and enters a cave where a woman claiming herself to be the real Solando is hiding. She tells Teddy that she is a former psychiatrist who discovered experiments to develop mind control. But they have been unethically conducted by hospital management. Tedddy returns to the hospital and asks Cawley about Chuck’s whereabouts, Cawley says that Teddy does not have any partner and that he arrived on the island all alone.

Teddy heads towards the lighthouse believing Chuck was taken to the lighthouse, Teddy overpowers him the doctor who tries to stop him and breaks into the lighthouse, but shockingly discovers Cawley waiting for him. Teddy confronts Cawley and reveals that he met Solando, and also he believes that they are experimenting on him. Cawley then tells Teddy that Solando never existed, and insists that he has not been drugged.

Revelation of Twist and Reality:

The surprising facts are revealed by Chuck and he reveals that  he is in fact, Dr. Sheehan. Cawley then explains that “Teddy” is Andrew Laeddis, a U.S. Marshal who is admitted at Ashecliffe for murdering his depressive wife after she drowned their three kids.

Andrew denied treatment for her wife Dolores when she burned down their apartment but instead moved his family to a house far from the town and near to a lake, where Dolores killed all their kids. Aggrieved by her actions Laeddis kills her and he turns insane.

Andrew’s delusions are a result of his guilt of killing his wife and losing his children, Andrew finally recounts the truth, and doctors believe that he is in a normal state. But, Cawley recalls that he had achieved this state nine months before, but quickly Andrew again started to show schizophrenia symptoms. He warns that this will be Andrew’s last chance.

Later, Andrew sits on the hospital grounds with Sheehan. Andrew seems to be delusional again, refers to Sheehan as “Chuck” and says they must leave the island. Sheehan signals to Cawley, who orders that Andrew must be lobotomized. Andrew then asks Sheehan what would be worse “to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?” An astonished Sheehan calls Andrew “Teddy” but the latter does not respond and leaves peacefully with the officials for his operation.
